I've never done a book review before, so bear with me...
tldr: Pretty good. I'll be reading TDA #2 when that comes out. Plot had some minor issues. Imagery was good. Technical details (grammar, formatting, etc.) were fine.

Plot: My biggest critique is that it was slow starting off. Not boring-slow (I was never bored while reading), but where-is-the-action-slow. About the first half of the book is used solely to introduce the main characters and explain some things about the afterlife. To be perfectly honest, I was beginning to wonder if there was actually going to be any tension or conflict at all, or if it was just going to be a documentary-of-sorts of the afterlife...
Additionally, once the plot started, everything happened really quickly. It is a short book, so part of it could be from that, but it didn't really like there was much build up to the climax. Like I said earlier, the plot didn't really start until halfway through, and then the conflict was over when I was ~85% through the book. (I read this on the kindle iPod app, so I don't have firm page numbers...) In an ~85 page book, that equates to only about 30 plot-filled pages.

Imagery: Shockley does an excellent job painting an image in your mind. I frequently found myself visualizing what the characters were doing, which makes the book read much more easily, more like watching a film than processing words and sentences.

Technical stuff: a few minor grammatical errors, but nothing too serious. There were occasional instances in which not-quite-correct punctuation was used to make the sentence flow better than if it had been "correct," but as a whole, it met my standards for grammar ;)

Note: I don't really have a firm standard for star-giving. I just sort of "go with my gut" and put down a rating that feels right. Here are a few other books that I rated three stars: I, Robot; The Little Prince; Pride and Prejudice; 1984; The Old Man and the Sea; All Quiet on the Western Fron

A beautifully written story about the afterlife we all dream of, told from the dog’s point of view. A sweet, sweet story.
Comforting, sweet book.
Waiting for the Book 2.
Great short book.
The beginning of this book brought back a flood of emotions and memories from dogs we have lost previously. However I took great comfort in reading Shockley's take on the afterlife. It was not only touching in regards to animal death, it is also a comforting reminder for human passing. I enjoyed reading about the spiritual side and the rescue of a lost little boy's soul. My absolute favorite part of the book was a reference to dogs having souls just like humans - in fact every living thing has a soul! It's a wonderful read with a happy ending!
This is a terrific book to read to a young child at bedtime. The story is straight forward and easy to comprehend and it stars some very adorable talking dogs (and what child does not love talking animals?). It is a lovely story for any child but if your family has recently experienced the loss of a beloved pet it is even more appropriate (given the title I don't think that counts as a spoiler).

It might be a bit saccharine for the adults but the kids will eat it like Ice Cream with a spoon. Also it could have used another editing pass. I have a terrible eye for editing mistakes so if I catch a few then there are undoubtedly a few more.

The one thing that would make this book even better would be a large size print version with some sweet illustrations. Of course publishing being what it is that is only going to happen if some publisher gets behind it with some $$$. So come on New York!
